Mac N' Cheese

Being in college and living the dorm life I am forced to dine at the dining commons especially when i run out of my limited sodexo bucks that are so generously offered thorugh my meal plan. The dining commons is not thw worst place on earth but I find myself getting very tired of the same meals throughout the week. Like most college students I too enjoy my microwavable items that change up the usually menu from the everyday DC experience. One of my favorite microwave specialties would be Mac N' Cheese. Of course consuming the amount that i would like too is not very healthy. So I try to holdback from buying too much kraft and velveeta products. However, i recently came across another brand of Mac N' Cheese that seemed to be slightly more healthy and pretty reasonably priced. This past week I tried Annie's for the first time and found a new love. Annie's has some benefits that the other types do not. Annie's offers all natural ingrediants as well as organic products. There macaroni and cheese offers a good source of protein and calcium as well as fiber and 0trans fat, which is something that the other types could not offer. Annie's cheese is made from all natural cow's milk from dairy farmers who have pledged not use hormones to increase the cows milk production. They also do not use any artificial food colorings. Besides their actual product they are big on sustainable and organic agriculture following their motto planet to food, food to people, people to planet. They also providde scholorship opportunities for college students who are enetering fields like environmental science and public health fields. They want to keep people consious to how foods are made, what is being consumed and how it effects our world. This news to me was all very exciting because i now do not feel so guilty about indulging in my most favorite comort food a few times a week to escape the monotonous meals that are offered. So give Annies's a try!

  1. Awesome topic Hadley!!! As you know I am a Mac N’ Cheese connoisseur and I have actually had the Annie’s brand in the past. Organic food can get expensive, but most grocery stores make a generic form of this brand for a fraction of the price. Another ingredient to look for in any pasta/ bread is whole grain wheat. A lot of the boxed Mac N’ Cheese products have enriched flour which is not as good as the whole grain wheat. Mac N’ Cheese is the one thing that I crave in this world, and I just need to be conscious of my portion sizes and not eat the entire box!!!

  2. I needed to post another comment on your blog because I actually just made a really healthy version on the traditional Mac N' Cheese. Instead of using the traditional pasta I made spaghetti from a spaghetti squash right in my microwave then just melted some of my favorite cheeses with a little bit of milk then poured it on the spaghetti. For those who are Mac N' Cheese lovers and want a more healthful option you will love this recipe. If anyone has questions or wants a further explanation on how to make this dish, just let me know I will be happy to share it!!

  3. Mac and cheese is as well one of my favorite meals. most times I eat it on a quick lunch break, so I portion my size right when its finished and then leave the house so i am forced not to eat the whole box, which I can also be guilty of. My brother is a big fan of Annie's but sometimes you cant beat good old kraft. Thanks alycia for a healthy alternative recipe, definitley something im gonna have to try.

  4. I love annie's mac n cheese! I don't eat any other kind of mac n cheese now and it is a great bonus it is organic. I had no idea that they gave out scholarships or the other work they do. I think this is a great alternative to regular mac n cheese and I think it would be an easy switch for most people. Great topic to choose to show people there are more opinions out there that are better for you!
